Car loans for newcomers in Manitoba
New to Canada, or no credit history yet? You can apply for a car loan in Manitoba. Auto Approved is a used car dealership on Nairn Avenue in Winnipeg, here since 2000, that arranges financing through lenders. Each lender decides on its own criteria, and the answer depends on your history.

Situations newcomers ask about
Auto Approved is a dealership, not a lender. We send your application to lenders, and each one decides based on its own criteria. These are the questions newcomers ask us most.
New to Canada, no Canadian credit yet
The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada says Canada’s credit bureaus only collect information about credit activity in Canada. A good record back home may not show up here, although some lenders may look at it.
No credit history at all
Equifax Canada says a file without enough information may show no score or a zero, and that this is not a sign of bad credit. Lenders then look at the rest of your application, such as income and employment.
Driving on a licence from another country
Manitoba Public Insurance says new residents can drive on a valid licence for up to three months. After that, most people need a Manitoba licence, and whether you need tests depends on the country that issued yours.
Some Canadian credit, but a low score
If you have built some credit in Canada and your score is low, the same lenders review your application. Read how bad credit car loans work at Auto Approved.

What do you need to apply as a newcomer?
The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada says lenders generally require proof of regular income, a bank account and a permanent address. Having these ready helps your application move faster.
Proof of income
Recent pay stubs are a common way to show income. If you started your job recently, ask the lender which records it will accept.
A Canadian bank account
The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada says you have the right to open a bank account, even if you do not have a job yet. Car loan payments usually come out of that account automatically.
Photo ID and proof of address
A valid driver’s licence is the usual photo ID, and a recent utility bill, bank statement or lease shows your address in Manitoba. Our document checklist covers every item.

Can newcomers get a car loan in Manitoba?
You can apply. Auto Approved works with newcomers, and the answer depends on your history. Each lender decides based on its own criteria, such as your income, your documents and any credit you have built in Canada.
Does my credit history from another country count in Canada?
Not automatically. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada says Canada’s credit bureaus only collect information about credit activity in Canada, and that some lenders may look at your credit history from another country.
Can you finance a car with no credit history?
You can apply. Equifax Canada says a file without enough information may show no score or a zero, and that this is not a sign of bad credit. Lenders then look at the rest of your application, such as income and employment.
Do I need a SIN to apply?
No. Our application does not ask for your Social Insurance Number.
Can I drive in Manitoba with a licence from another country?
For a while. Manitoba Public Insurance says new residents can drive on a valid licence for up to three months. After that, most people need a Manitoba licence. If your country is not on MPI’s exchange list, you need a knowledge test and a road test.
How can I build credit in Canada?
The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada says paying your bills on time builds a strong payment history, and that a secured credit card may be an option for newcomers with no credit history. It also says having different types of credit, such as a credit card and a car loan, can help your score.
Do you offer guaranteed approval?
No. No one can honestly guarantee approval, because the lender makes the decision. What we can do is tell you plainly where you stand.
