The documents you need to finance a car in Manitoba

Five items cover almost every application. Here is what each one proves, what to use if you do not have it, and the one thing dealers owe you at delivery.

Gather these before you apply and you remove the most common reason applications stall.

1. Photo identification

A valid Manitoba driver licence covers it. It confirms who you are and that you can legally drive what you are financing.

2. Proof of income

Recent pay stubs are the default. If you are self-employed, seasonal, or paid in cash, bank statements covering the last three months usually do the same job. Contract work is fine. Irregular income is fine. What a lender cannot work with is income you mention but cannot show.

3. Proof of address

A utility bill, bank statement or lease with your name and current address, usually dated within the last 60 days. A piece of mail with no date on it gets sent back.

4. Banking information

A void cheque or a pre-authorised debit form so payments can be set up. It also lets a lender confirm your income arrives where you said it does, which is often what turns a maybe into a yes.

5. Trade-in paperwork

Registration and both sets of keys if you have them. If there is still a loan on the vehicle, bring the lender name and the current payout amount. That balance affects the new deal, so finding it out early saves a second trip. If you are weighing the trade against a private sale, the tax math is worth reading first.

If you are new to Canada

You may not have a Canadian credit file yet. Bring your work permit or permanent residency documents alongside proof of income and address, and ask specifically what the lenders being approached will need in your situation. The answer varies by lender, so a general reassurance is worth less than a straight answer about yours.

The document the dealer owes you

In Manitoba a valid Certificate of Inspection is required to register a vehicle when ownership transfers, and if you buy from a dealer, the dealer must issue you one. It confirms the vehicle met basic safety standards at the time it was inspected. It is not a detailed engine or transmission inspection and it is not a guarantee of overall quality, so treat it as a floor rather than a verdict.

Missing something?

Say so early instead of hoping nobody notices. There is almost always an alternative document that answers the same question. The worst version of this is a file that sits untouched for a week because one item was outstanding and nobody mentioned it.

When your paperwork is together, start your application, or call 204-781-9992 and we will tell you what your situation specifically needs.
